Les, Colin and I went up Mt Kenya with some friends - Peter and Andy. We went up the tourist peak - Lenana - because you can walk all the way. We spent two nights on the mountain, climbing the peak and then going all the way back down on the third day.
On the third day we got up in the dark as we had to go up the scree while it was still frozen. This last bit, particularly from Austrian Hut was very difficult due to the lack of oxygen. We had to stop every few yards and I was sick for a short time on the way down, which is one of the symptons of mountain sickness - this results from over exertion when you are not used to the low oxygen and can be very serious.
We came down the short way - down the long scree - which was just beginning to unfreeze - very scary, and finally down the vertical bog. This was not bog when we were there and we just stepped down on dry tufts that seemed to go on forever.
